Unappreciated Blessings

A common thing that happens when I do a little spring cleaning is finding things that I forgot owning. Have you ever put a clothing item in your closet only to realize you had the same thing already? For example, I have two of the exact same shirt, purchased months apart, because I forgot what I already had. And just the other day, when I was cleaning out my basement, I came across some parts for my lawn mower. I had completely forgotten that I purchased them at the end of last season, and literally had the same items in my Amazon shopping cart because I needed them. I am guessing it would do us all some good to pause and think about the many wonderful things the Lord has done for us. The apostle Paul calls this “the secret of being content” in all circumstances.

In its context, Paul says this, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance, and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:11-13 ESV) Paul took the time to consider his abundance and plenty, and it helped him in his time of need and hunger.

As we do some spiritual spring cleaning, I invite you to consider reflecting on the many wonderful things God has done for you. Perhaps you will be surprised to see how it helps you with those nasty temptations of envy and greed. I believe that God reminds us daily that He is our Jehovah Jireh, our wonderful provider. But we need to take the time and energy to pause and notice. Like we sing, “And all my life you have been faithful… And all my life you have been so so good… With every breath that I am able… Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God.”

Expectantly,

Shawn
